October 29, 2026
On Saturday, November 14, Swansboro by Candlelight opens at 5 p.m., with luminaries lining the streets of historic downtown Swansboro. Also at 5 p.m., the Swansboro Dance Studio performs scenes from its Nutcracker. At 6 p.m. the Town of Swansboro lights its Christmas tree in Olde Towne Square.
Thirteen days later, on Friday, November 27, the waterfront fills again at 5 p.m. Around 6 p.m. the lighted boats of the Christmas Flotilla enter the harbor and circle for 20 to 30 minutes.
These are two different events with two different hosts, one on the streets and one on the water. Each puts its main moment at about 6 p.m., with more evening still to come. Planning either night comes down to those later hours, and on both nights they belong to the shops and restaurants of Front Street, Church Street and Water Street.
The town's own spring 2026 merchant map lists both dates in its annual events column, along with a fallback date for the boats. Side by side, the two evenings line up like this:
| Swansboro by Candlelight | Christmas Flotilla | |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026 | Friday, Nov. 27, 2026 |
| Rain date | None listed | Saturday, Nov. 28 |
| Host | Swansboro Downtown Merchants & Restaurants | Presented by Team Chevrolet of Swansboro |
| Starts | 5 p.m. | 5 p.m. |
| The main moment | Tree lighting at 6 p.m., Olde Towne Square | Boats enter the harbor about 6 p.m. and circle 20 to 30 minutes |
| Listed end | 9 p.m. | 8 p.m. in the county's 2026 roundup |
| Setting | Downtown streets and storefronts | The White Oak River waterfront |
Candlelight runs four hours, and its two scheduled performances both happen in the first hour. The flotilla's boats are on the water for half an hour at most. On both nights, most of the evening comes after the headline moment.
The Candlelight listing on Only In Onslow describes luminaries lining the streets, decorated shop windows, live entertainment in Olde Towne Square, and refreshments from the downtown merchants and restaurants. In order, the evening runs:
Candlelight is a shopping event, and the stores in the merchant guide fit the season. Novelty Nook runs a year-round Christmas store with ornaments and décor, plus Swansboro logo merchandise. Seasons on Main carries curated seasonal décor and gifts for holidays. Silver Line Jewelry, Art & Unique Finds stocks coastal pieces made in the Carolinas. Boro Girl Boutique sells locally made art, home décor and gifts inside the Russell's Building. Rocket Fizz offers retro candy, soda and toys for anyone shopping with children.
The same guide lists Swansboro Front Street Grocery for microbrews, wine, jams and pickled items. Dini's Martinis and Desserts serves craft cocktails and desserts. For a seated dinner, Church Street Market & Pub has sandwiches, soups and a wine list. Holiday hours can differ from the spring listings, so it is best to call ahead for anything planned after 8 p.m.
The flotilla is the one evening of the two where the logistics need checking ahead of time. The two 2026 descriptions of the event give different parking plans.
The organizer's flotilla page says to park at the Ward Farm fields behind the Hampton Inn and take a shuttle to Town Hall, then walk downtown. It also lists handicap parking at Town Hall, with a golf-cart shuttle to the waterfront. Onslow County's 2026 holiday roundup, published October 12, instead says to park at the Municipal Park fields off Recreation Way and take a hayride to the downtown waterfront. One of the two will likely be updated before the 27th. The organizer's page is the one to check that week.
Last year's street plan gives a sense of how much of downtown the event covers. For the 2025 flotilla, streets closed at 3 p.m. so vendors could set up, and they reopened around 9 p.m. The closures included:
Elm Street stayed open southbound and Walnut Street stayed open northbound. Vehicles, personal golf carts, scooters and bicycles were not allowed inside the event area. Residents, merchants and employees were asked to park at Town Hall. The 2026 closures have not been posted, so this list describes last year's event only. Anyone living on those blocks who needs a car out on the evening of the 27th has reason to watch for the town's notice.
The rain date matters too. The merchant map lists Saturday, November 28 as the flotilla's fallback. If Friday's weather moves the boats, Thanksgiving weekend's Saturday evening shifts with them.
The county roundup describes music along the waterfront, funnel cakes, cider and hot cocoa. The organizer adds a visit with Santa for children. Once the boats finish circling, several downtown restaurants overlook the same water. The hours below come from the spring 2026 merchant guide:
| Restaurant | What the guide lists | Spring 2026 hours |
|---|---|---|
| Saltwater Grill, 99 W. Church St. | Seafood, steaks, full bar, wine selection | Not listed |
| By The Bridge Restaurant | Waterfront dock-and-dine, Caribbean-flavored American fare, late-night service | Open daily from 7:30 a.m. |
| Boro Low Country Kitchen | Open-air and covered waterfront seating, steam pots, po'boys | Tues to Fri 12 to 9 p.m.; Sat and Sun 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
| The BORO Restaurant & Bar | Coastal Carolina cuisine, live acoustic music Thursday through Saturday | Open daily at 11 a.m. |
| il Cigno Italiano | Waterfront Italian, the Copper Bar | Opens 4 p.m., closed Tuesdays |
| Riverside Steak & Seafood | NC seafood, steaks, full bar | Not listed |
| Preston's Corner Bar & Grill & The Back Bar on Front Street | Coastal cooking, two bars that stay open late | Open seven days |
Candlelight falls on a Saturday and the flotilla on a Friday, and every restaurant above with listed hours shows itself open on both days. Saltwater Grill and Riverside Steak & Seafood list no hours, so a call ahead settles those two. Restaurants along a closed street and a crowded waterfront will be busy between the end of the boats and the end of the event, so it is wise to reserve or arrive early.
Between November 14 and November 27, the same riverfront is open on ordinary evenings. The merchant map describes three town parks on the water:
Two evening programs at Hammocks Beach State Park bracket the first event: an Owl Prowl on November 10, four days before Candlelight, and Night Sky Naked Eye on November 17, both at 5:30 p.m. Both start half an hour before the time the two holiday events save for their main moments. On weekends, the Swansboro Heritage Center at 502 Church St. is open from 1 to 4 p.m., which fits into the afternoon before Candlelight starts.
